I have an SGPT above average. The average is 4 to 36 u/l and mine is 49 u/l. I don’t know if I should be alarmed, but I searched its meaning and it is:

“SGPT: Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, an enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells. SGPT is released into blood when the liver or heart are damaged. The blood SGPT levels are thus elevated with liver damage (for example, from viral hepatitis) or with an insult to the heart (for example, from a heart attack). Some medications can also raise SGPT levels. Also called alanine aminotransferase (ALT).” Ref: http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6321

I guess I should be taking care of my body now, I hope I would see my doctor soon. I’m having a hard time, finding time for it. Busy with work and a lot of other things …

Well, indicated on the medical sheet I was given, it was stated there that 4 to 36 u/l is the average or should I say normal level. So, I based it there.

What is the unit of measurement? Is it U/L as well? If so, that is high.
Here’s some tip that made me lose weight:
* Drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses a day, but advisable 5 liters a day. This is to cleanse your body from whatever abnormalities it has. The problem here is that you will keep on urinating, but it is just normal. - DON’T stop yourself from urinating :)
* Make sure that you eliminate waste (bowel movement - BM) at least once a day. I make it a point that after I wake up in the morning, I do this, as to not interrupt any activity during the day.
* Have a full body massage at least twice a month. This is to make your body relax. I call our masseuse every time I feel so stressed out. I do mine once a week :)
* Walk at least 30 minutes non stop (just normal walk, it would be nice if you do this on a beach side). This was my doctors advice.

That is indeed high … but don’t you worry … just help your husband follow the doctor’s advice. No alcoholic drinks … but drink plenty of water to wash out those unwanted chemicals in our body. Have a healthy living. Exercise - a walk on the beach side everyday would be nice (if you live near the beach). My doctor’s advice is to have at least 30 minutes of walking everyday.
Don’t jug on the roadside, you might inhale pollution, and it might worsen the situation.
Have a happy and healthy living … don’t worry too much.

Every summer when I have lots of beers, my LFT (liver functionality test) shows an SGPT of 70+ and Alkaline Phosphatase of 147 (Nomal range for this is 30-120). This started with me after I recovered from Jaundice. So the docs prescribe me lots of water (fluids they call) as usual, plus they prescribe me Liv 52 (A liver functionality enhancement tablet) to be taken every night before bed time for 2 months. And ofcourse, as far as my experience goes, without exercise, all the above methods would only be 30% as effective, my doc said. Most Important facts to avoid this high count are 1. TIMELY, REGULAR and HEALTHY food, 2. NO Alocohol at all, 3. NO smoking at all 4. Lots of fluids (especially those which improve the healthy bacteria count in the intestines) like buttermilk; all this atleast stricly till the SGPT count comes down again to normal levels. Patience and strong will to continue these for 2 months without fail.. the next test would give the scorecard of your rigour.. Good Luck !

The SGPT results are connected to liver and heart, so doctors that deals with those would be the best to consult.
I guess its your diet that cause you to have high SGPT. I wonder if you eat fatty food, then it might be the cause of it. Try to eat healthy and exercise. A walk in the beach for at least 30 minutes everyday would be nice :)

hi! this is evelyn again, i posted last june 20, thanks for your reply.

i have this inquiry again. my husbands doctor told him to stop drinking beer, but he can take red wine instead. am not that sure if the doctor told him that he can replace redwine for beer. i just want to clear things, is it ok for my him to drink red wine instead of drinking beer? sa office kasi nila, they have their friday club, who normally drink beer after office every fridays. for my husband, instead of drinking beer, he drinks red wine. so every friday or even on week-ends, instead of beer, he drinks red wine. his sgpt last june was 93.8 u/l

i just want to ask if, is it really ok for him to drink red wine weekly? wala ba talagang alcohol content ang red wine? my husband is 40 yrs. old. am worried for him, baka kasi hindi pwede in his case to drink red wine every fridays. or is it really ok for him, basta lang wag beer?

thank you so much.

Red wine is okay pero not too much a shot would be okay. If your husband is a heavy drinker, he has to control himself. Some people drink red wine before they sleep, this is somehow a cure for people with insomnia.

He could drink red wine every Friday as long as he doesn’t overdo it.

Again, too much of something is bad :)

Good luck to you and your husband.

No, it will not cause a liver damage. In fact liver damage may be the cause of that abnormal SGPT. There were 2 thing that my doctor told me, it is either a liver damage or I have had a high blood attack.
I often do feel dizzy when my cholesterol boost up. That maybe the cause of mine.
However, with a proper diet, it might be cured.
Just ask doctors advice on that one.

Hi Andoy, have you been exercising as well? I don’t know why it went up, but I am the kind of person who does not like to take medicines. I prefer drinking water, that is all I do. Medicines have side effects and sometimes if you get immune with it, it will not be effective. So, I stay away from those and use my body to heal my sickness for now. When I get old, that is the time I would take medicines if I can’t do exercise anymore. Good luck to being healthy.

thanks..God bless!!!

As I have mentioned High SGPT might be the effect of liver damage or heart attack. I don’t know which of those situation has triggered your high SGPT. Buko juice is considered to be a medicine when someone has a kidney problem. It helps cleans the kidney as long as you urinate when you feel like doing it.

Now I wonder, why is it I have a different normal range for SGPT, commenter “health” has different range and you have a different range as well.

Hi Jason, I am not a medical person but I am a net babe :P So, I’ll do the research for you to explain the result and as someone who has same experience, I will tell you what my doctor advised me to do.

Base on http://www.daily-diabetic.com/50226711/is_your_fbs_normal.php
From 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) = Normal glucose tolerance
– So yours is above normal. Which means you have to lessen your sweets or no sweets at all for a month.

Base on http://www.bchealthguide.org/kbase/topic/special/hw115432/sec1.htm
* Best is less than 4.1 mmol/L (160 mg/dL).
* Borderline-high is 4.1 mmol/L to 6.1 mmol/L (160 mg/dL to 240 mg/dL). Even borderline-high cholesterol makes you more likely to have a heart attack.
* High is 6.2 mmol/L (240 mg/dL) or above.
– This you have to lessen your cholesterol intake as well, because you have exceeded the borderline. Food you should avoid: mayonnaise, egg, butter, fatty foods … actually a lot of good foods …
If you want to drink milk, look for the non fat or skimmed milk.
I remember, I only eat fish during my diet and the oil we use is not an ordinary oil but a vegetable oil, because ordinary oil just have high cholesterol.

Same source as the above, for your LDL:
> Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are the “bad” cholesterol. LDL is mostly fat with only a small amount of protein. It can clog your arteries. If you have high cholesterol, your doctor will want you to lower your LDL.
> LDL should be less than 2.6 mmol/L (100 mg/dL). LDL increases your risk of heart problems, so the lower your LDL, the better. A level of 4.1 mmol/L (160 mg/dL) or above is high.
– Just avoid the above mentioned food.

I don’t know what the ratio meant, but for the SGPT, my post explains about it.

This was my doctor’s advice and I am giving it to you. This involves no drug, but needs physical effort.
> Walking for at least 30 minutes - best done on the beach side. If you do it in a polluted place, you might inhale all the pollution and instead of making you feel well, your situation might worsen.
> Drink plenty of water. The advisable amount is at least 8 glasses a day. Water helps clean unwanted substance in our body. Just keep on urinating when you feel like it. You might have kidney stones if you will stop yourself from urinating.
This is my additional advise.
> Condition yourself to BM at least once a day. I do this every morning I wake up, to not bother me with my daily activities.
> If you feel stressed out, it is nice to have a massage to relax your body.

Good Luck!

Thanks Junelle for the very good advice…By the way, I am planning to enroll in a fitness program like gym for me to have enough exercise.. Do you think it might help?….
And given with these high laboratory results, do you think it will still back to normal?… I mean like no medicines at all?….I don’t wanna be a drug dependent and i’m hoping the best for my health after this 1 month medication..
Honestly, what keeps me worried is because it runs in our family the history of diabetis…. my mom is also a type 2 diabetic and until now,she is still under medication for so many years…
Is it true that once high sugar was triggered already, no more possibilities of preventing it?..I just hear this from a word of mouth but i’m not sure if this is true…I was just thinking of something that it will somewhat tell me now that i am a diabetic already…:(

If you could avoid those food that you should not take in, then I guess you will be healthy. If it runs in your family, it just means you have to be more careful, because you could easily get it. But I know someone who has a diabetic family then she resorted into being a vegetarian and she doesn’t seem to show any symptoms of having high sugar or any of those diabetic symptoms.

As for the gym. You have to be ready to face the food cravings, because exercise could stress you out and would make you hunger for food more than ever. If you think you can’t control yourself, then I guess for now you should start on walking and just the regular daily exercise. Once you are up on the beat after a month, then you could try a more effort exerting exercise … and eventually if you are ready, then you should go to a gym. But for me … base on my experience, the GYM made me even fatter :P because I would eat a lot after my session.

It is all a matter of self control … and I think you don’t need a gym for you to teach this lesson. Just put in your mind that you need to exercise and you need to limit yourself from some of the food you like.

You could do it!
